LGBT rights, transphobic law in Hungary. Arcigay: "It's unacceptable for the EU to turn a blind eye."“

Bologna, May 23, 2020 – “The European Union cannot turn a blind eye and betray itself: it must act to ensure that human rights are not violated in Hungary.” Gabriele Piazzoni, secretary general of Arcigay, harshly criticizes Hungary’s approval of Viktor Orbán’s so-called “Salad Law,” specifically Article 33, which prohibits the birth gender reassignment of transgender and intersex people. “Hungary,” Piazzoni continues, “is required to comply with the provisions of the European Court of Human Rights, which obliges member states to guarantee legal gender recognition, and is required to heed the European Parliament’s recommendations regarding the recognition of rights and protection from any discrimination against transgender people.“ Arcigay's Trans Network, in this regard, expresses strong concern for the Hungarian transgender community regarding the wave of stigma and violence to which this law inevitably subjects them: "Orbán's authoritarian drift," say the network's activists, "has led to the approval of this law, which permanently defines a person's gender solely 'on the basis of primary sexual characteristics and chromosomes,' even though identities cannot be defined solely and exclusively on the basis of mere biological data. This is a very serious act that erases the lives of thousands of people, their right to exist and self-determination. We will provide all possible assistance to contribute to the fight launched by transgender rights associations and activists in Hungary to oppose this law. We call on the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to intervene with concrete actions aimed at restoring full respect for human rights in Hungary, and we invite citizens to sign the petition launched on the ALL OUT platform. https://action.allout.org/it/m/cb6ca9cb/#panel-action-form“, they conclude.
